Both the saxo and 106 are the same car(underbeath the shell) with the same engine. If you buy a VTR (only 90bhp) you will always wish you had bought the VTS or 106 GTI (120bhp), however you will probably wish you hadn't bought either after a couple of months of onwership as they WILL fall apart. It is true, they are both reasonably quick (0-60 in around 7.5 secs and 120mph top speed) but they are both made out of tin foil and if you have an accident they will just crumble around you.
There are plenty of faster cheap cars our their for around 4-6 grand. I would have a look at the hond crx vti (1.6 but 160 bhp), toyota starlet turbo (1.3 turbo with 133bhp) and the toyota mr2 (mk1 1.6, 124bhp and mk2 2.0 154bhp/173bhp). All of these car will be faster than a saxo or 106 (except the mk1 mr2, but handles better) and are a lot less likely to fall apart.
As for running costs and insurance, if you shop around i would think you could insure any of the cars i've listed for the same amount as a VTS or gti.

I had a vtr, nice car but the vts is quite a bit quicker( insurance high I think) I would say the vtr was nippy rather than quick.
the 106 and the saxo are the same car but different badge, I am not sure but I think they do a rally sport 106 which is bloody quick.
Forget either if you have big feet, pedals close together

Had one of each and I would say the peugot is more fun drive and the girls seem to think they are nicer. Plus there are less 106 GTI on the Road. VTS is quicker than a 106 GTI but the VTR is not! I had half leather in my 106 but not in the VTR, GTI GTI GTI! 205 GTI 1.9 are the best. Tough to find a good one these days.

Performance wise, choose either the vts or 106 gti. For build quality go for the 106. I found the citroen a bit tinny. 106 handles better too. Hope this helps.

How about a Volkswagen Polo GTI?
I'd go with the Pug or the VW over the Citroen personally.
Honda Fit/Jazz is also worth a look, it's a surprisingly sporty little thing and it will be twice as reliable as anything else mentioned.

The Renault range is pretty good, with good spec. Have a look and compare at www.autotrader.co.uk. Gives you an informed opinion of the good and the bad and a rough price.

I'm with hugh, both are scrap and held together with superglue instead of weld.
I'd look towards a focus or similar if your budget stretches to it.

i have seen both after minor crashes and they both totally fell apart, i would not let any body in my family drive either of them other than perhaps a shopping trolley
