Mass immigration of Irish and German settlers, war between Mexico and America, a population boom, the lust for gold, and land opportunities, started the movement west.
The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 added almost double the size of the United States. The Lewis and Clark expedition lasted from 1804 to 1806. This expedition was then followed by more settlers who then traveled to the frontier. It also had people traveling to Oregon. When the first white people entered the Oregon region , Many Indian tribes lived there. The Chinook for example was one. The Chinook lived along the lower part of the Columbia River. Once mass numbers of settlers started to move their good terms with the Indians were broken. As the constant number of settlers came and slowly pushed the Indians off their land and into reservations. In 1845, Texas was annexed. Many of the Hispanics did not want the new settlers to come onto their land because they had heard how they had taken over the Indians land like locust. Many Hispanics did not welcome the coming of the Americans and others did welcome it. The Hispanics did not welcome the new white new settlers and retaliated against many of them. Britain ceded the Oregon country in 1846. The settlement caused the Indians to be moved from their homeland to new sites. Many Indian relations occurred due to this. Constant battle between settlers and Indians broke out as the Indians began to fight for their rights. The Indians began to take revenge for their losses. Indians attacked the wagon trains now commonly going through their land. Indians even attacked and burned newly settled settlements.
In the 1847s Irish and Germans started to migrate to the United States. Most of the Irish didn't have enough money to move to the west unlike the Germans. Only a few Irish had enough money to move west and become settlers. These Irish settlers were highly discriminated from other settlers who didn't like the Irish. Since at that time most of the US were non-Catholics escaping religious persecution. The people that were afraid of the pope believed he was going to bring power to the United States through the Irish. People often discriminated against them.
Mexico ceded California and much of the present day American Southwest in 1848. The California Gold Rush in 1848 attracted large numbers of prospectors, greatly contributing to the permanent settlement of the far west. The Hispanics in California hated the many settlers that came to California. The reason especially is because they realized the settlers would come in large numbers and settle large portions of land and even kick them off their own land. Like the Indians, the Hispanics were kicked off their own property and some even had to work on what used to be their own farms to make a living. The newspaper El Sol decried the "fanatical intolerance" of Americans for non whites, while El Mosquito Mexicano called U.S. a parasite that "devours Mexico's entrails."
At one time, the settlers relied on the Indians and had good terms with each other. Now that the settlers no longer relied on Indians for survival, they turned greedy and looked out for their best interest. Many disputes occurred between the Indians and settlers. Indians were commonly removed from their land and placed at someplace at no importance to the settlers. Over population, raised tensions, greed, and poor living conditions, Discrimination!
