First, there are no laws about it.

But, some big chains have company policies about such matters and you could call the coorporate office.

You could ask your employer about it, "hey, can you give me a little more notice?' Or, just tell them you have plans to be out of town or with family.

The best thing to do if they are doing this to all of the employees is act like it does not bother you...Happy to do it because...

All the other employees will do the complaining That you wanted to do but you come out looking like the best employee because you did not give them any problems... When they are looking to promote in a year or two that positive attitude may pay off in $$$$.

I don't think so. I have asked many of my employees to work over time for me and have never come across this question.
But what you can do, is express your opinions to your employer about giving you adequate notice. Or find out in what circumstances they would normaly asked you to work more. That way you can start to get a sense of when you will be needed. You may even start to see a rise in your pay by doing something like this. If not, you will deffinately start to get the respect of your employers a lot more. Believe it or not, employers like it when you speak your mind. It gives them an idea of exactly where you stand.

the place I paintings there's a sprint piece of wonderful print on the backside of the schedule that reads as follows: This schedule is barely a handbook. All scheduled shifts may well be replaced through administration at any time.
