You get your period when you body is ready to release an egg. Throughout the month your uterus develops a uterine lining that the egg stays on until it is ready to be released. If sperm hasn't gotten to the egg then your body will release it. It comes out in your blood which is what the uterine lining is made of. It is breaking down and coming out, which causes bloating, and back pain because of the lining.

Have a look here.

I get the same thing, it feels like someone has grabbed my spinal column and is squeezing it with the pain shooting down my legs as well. Its due to the relaxing of the ligaments in the pelvis from the change in hormones during your period

If you can, try an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen, but make sure you eat something with it as it can really irritate your stomach. And believe it or not, plain old paracetamol works as well, just take it before the pain is really bad. However, do not go above the recommended dose.

Just an extra note, you may also find that you will have diarrhea at the same time as well. That is also due to the hormone changes during menstruation.
