Have her wash and dry an empty Altoids ( or similar) tin and paint it a solid color ( there is a paint in the craft stores made especially for metal...less than $2) or glue a pretty paper or fabric all over the outside. If painting.....decorate with stickers once the paint is dry. Inside, fill with a few needles( stuck through a folded piece of paper), safety pins, assorted thread wrapped around a piece of cardboard, some odd buttons and a tape measure if there is room.

If she is sending it to a child in another country although the rice bag already mentioned is neat, it is impractical as they may not have microwaves.
How about a small doll. A colorful blanket. If you get 2 pieces of the fleece that does not unravel from the store {Walmart craft section sells it in material area} Take the edges and cut strips about 2 inches up all the way around each piece. Then take the two pieces of fleece and place one on top of the other. Take the pieces you cut and tie them together with the pieces on the other piece of material. After it is all knotted you have a blanket. No sewing involved. Make it colorul and pretty to the eye and a child will love it! You could do the same with 2 smaller pieces b ut make sure they are big enough to enclose a pillow. EAsy!
Hope it makes sense to you.

I was going to say get her a book on knitting, but for Africa? Go to a craft store or Wal-mart and get her a latch hook kit, it is like a rug. I am currently making a teddy bear rug thingy.

She could make a rice bag for supplying heat when someone is sick, like a ear ache or back ache. You just sew together two wash cloths, leave a hole and fill one third with plain white rice, then sew up the hole. Make a little pillow case for it with two other wash cloths. You can purchase these in dollar store cheap. Then put in the microwave for two mintues. Presto, instant comforting heat! :) Arum These make great gifts for all ages. :) arum

She can make book marks as they do have books. They're quick and easy, and she can draw shapes, trace templates, and use glitter.
