I rise to the challenge by responding "says who." Some statistics would be nice to see.
Meanwhile I join others in saying from The North of Scottland, west to British Columbia, and south to Tasmania, English people prolly drink not all that much more. I say English in the sense of all those who are decended from England's culture and attitudes. I suppose I had better include the USA in the count as well.

In the 25-member EU, 90 percent of 15- and 16-year-old students have consumed alcohol at some point in their lives, a rate far higher than in the United States, according to the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs.
On average, they begin to drink at 12½ and get drunk for the first time at 14. Among 15-year-old Danes, 50 percent of the boys and 37 percent of the girls drink every week, according to a study by the University of Copenhagen.
In countries such as Ireland, the UK and Denmark, what is termed "binge" drinking is common. This refers to reserving drinking alcohol for a few days a week - usually from Thursday and then consuming 4 or more liters of beer or 7 pints of beer in an evening. The intention of some younger drinkers is actually to get drunk/merry when heading out on an evening to drink.

HA! After all the complaining about generalizations look how many of you assumed he was American! Some of you sound as ignorant as she does for asking this question. And, as an American, I thought you all liked tea and now I couldn't give less of a damn!
To the question: Perhaps what you consider too much is normal to the English. It depends on the person. Good luck.

The islands that make up Great Brittan are cold and usually dreary with odd days of sunshine. Spend any amount of time in a cold foggy land where people eat animal organs on a daily basis, and you might lean towards a warm way to take the edge off of the every day overcast.

Yes we do. It is fun. I think our neanderthal roots are too close to the surface, plus have you seen the cost of living in the UK? Our taxes? I am quite well travelled and I honestly think there are very very few places left in the world more expensive than London. I am a civil servant and I could never in my wildest dreams afford a mortgage. Its depressing!
