For dry patches, use Castor oil. It's clear, but thick. Warm a little in the microwave and massage it in. It will absorb but it takes longer than a lotion, which has more water than oil.

Probably best to do this after bathing when the skin is moist and soft.

Castor oil works wonderfully for winter dry hands and feet.

I just had that too on my elbow. I always have super soft skin so to have a patch of scaley dry skin was uncommon. This patch was on my elbow for over a month but then I just got an Aveeno gift basket for christmas. I used the intensive hand lotion on my elbow and I swear within 48 hours this dry patch was gone and softer than ever. Thank god. You have got to try it! Nothing else worked for a month and this was like pure magic.

You can use topical oils and creams but it won't cure the problem. Where are the patches of dry skin and what caused it? It could be a protein deficiency. It could be a lack of oil. It could be not enough vitamins. It could be nerve problems. Stress. There isn't enough information here to help.

Right after a hot shower use lotion Your pores will soak in the lotion more readily because they're open from the heat and keep the lotion handy throughout the day.Preferable lotion with out any perfumes and added nutrients for the skin to help it heal. If you smoke stop, because it constricts the blood vessels that supply your skin with what it needs.Hence cold hands and feet.

Take fish oil, it will help replenish the natural oils in your skin. Put on lotion over your wet skin when you get out of the shower. When water dries off of your skin it also evaporates the moisture that was already in your skin, drying it out further. Don't exfoiliate too often and don't shave too often, it dries out your skin. Try shea butter or coco butter.

Warm showers not hot.
Mild soap and go easy on it. Try Cetaphil.
Put lotion on after your shower while you are still damp.
Use shay butter or other thick cream on those areas that are very dry.
No scratching.
See a dermatologist.
