I bet you can keep on in a hamster cage depending on the size. we used to have lots of gerbils we just made some cages with ramps and things it was awesome. on a website i read it's best to keep it in a glass tank. here are good websites to look that up on:

Well according to Webster's dictionary, a hamster is "a small rodent with a short tail often used as a pet" and a gerbil is "a small rodent with a long furry tail often used as a pet." Therefore they are virtually the same type of pet. I had a hamster as a child. Some differences include sleep patterns, playfulness, social patterns, and temperment. For more info see one of the sites provided.
In any case, both pets would be happy in the same cage. However, it is recommended that if you get a gerbil, get more than one. Gerbils are very active and like company. See the websites provided. Good Luck!

Dear baby smurf, I dont suggest this, because gerbils do not have bones, they have cartilege which is a soft matter and is very flexable thus allowing a mouse or a gerbil to squeeze through the space between the bars. Glad to be of help. Jan

I would recommend a glass aquarium for gerbils. They're usually tinier and depending on how wide the bars are, they *can* squeeze through.
