If we believe in an open opportunity market, protectionism is unfair. To say that you believe in free enterprise and then seek to prevent certain parts of the population from participating freely in the market is contradictory. We don't need an answer to poverty as much as we need economic justice. If we can achieve economic justice, then poverty will cease to be a problem.

Yes, protectionism is unfair to consumers -- why should the government intrude on your choice of whether to buy product A or product B? Protectionism BY DEFINITION means the government is forcing you as a consumer to make a undesirable choice that is bad for you, that you wouldn't make of your own free will.
We don't engage in free trade to help any other country. It DOES help trading partners, because free trade is good for both parties. But the reason we do it is because it makes US richer. No one individual or business buys an imported product unless doing so is better for them than the alternative. That's what's so immensely stupid about interfering with free trade.

Kevin, is an economic legend, everytime he gets the first good answer out of hte blocks.
Protectionism is unfair to foreign businesses, countries, AND domestic consumers.
Why should I pay X dollars for good Y, when I can pay half it to get it form another country if i was able to. Why should consumers be forced to play so much more money so a domestic shareholder can make huge profits.
Trade benefits society overall. Consumers benefit SO MUCH MORE from free trade than local businesses lose, and business as a whole gains, because of new opportunities in foreign markets.

Here's the deal.
When you help someone get going, they really get going, and once they've got going then you benefit, so it may look like charity now, but you're really helping yourself.
Like buying a house. It looks like your "rent" went up (as mortgages are higher), and you have to take care of all the repairs yourself, but that "higher rent" is merely you paying yourself for later when you can make a huge profit or not have a monthly payment at all.
I know it's difficult for some people to wrap their minds around, but it's called the Big Picture, and when you look at it, you make wise choices.

Yes it's unfair, no we don't have to help anyone.
BUT, in order to preserve a good image on the world political stage, we SHOULD encourage globalization and we SHOULD help the third world TO THE DEGREE THAT IT WANTS OUR HELP.
