The rich people like the fact that poor people are forced to pay a poll tax to fund their TV programs

Good job, Ramo. I was just about to say no wireless license for quite a few years now. As far as the tele licence, think of it like the disk tax for a car. Some people may drive daily, some rarely, but for the car to be parked or driven on the roads, the tax is mandatory. Bloody, every government taxes for Tele in some way, I suppose. The USA with Public Broadcasting (a bad version of a lot of things, looking at their website) gets some of its money from American taxpayers.

To answer your question and to slightly tidy up a point in a previous answer given.
You need a licence in order to be able, legally, to receive TELEVISION transmissions. This will cover you for radio transmissions also.
If you do NOT have a television but ONLY a radio, you do not need a licence: the old wireless licence was abolished years ago. I strongly doubt the point about the BBC ending the licence system when analogue goes west!

Because it is a licence to receive television broadcasts, if you do not have a TV licence and you have a radio, you must buy a radio licence.
The TV licence covers both, NOTHING to do with the channel providers, but set by the government!
When analogue broadcasts stop in 2008 - 2012, so will the licence.
The government is considering subscription for all digital channels, just like Sky TV.

i have been asking myself the same thing for many years, the licence fee is used to fund the bbc only,we would not need a tv licence if we only had the remaining channels as they fund themselves through advertising.

i do not think that they are worth the money and it is only when we get together and protest againt them they will take notice -remember the poll tax

Because the BBC is a political tool for the government. Thus you have to pay for it!

Agreed, but it's not going to change and it's only about £3-4 p/w anyway.
I do hate it tho..
What really annoys me is the other channels the "beeb" control (UKgold, UKhistory etc) all survive on advertising revenue.

The same reason you pay all taxes. Because you have to and you have little control what it's spent on and whether you use it.
