I had set up a shared network on my mom's computer and now it won't work. I think because she updated the norton virus software. I had the printer connected to the desktop and available for the laptop to print wirelessly. Also she was able to access her shared document folder so that when she worked on her laptop, she could save the files on the desktop main folder. How do I make this work again? I created a new network but that didn't work.

Turn ALL your software firewalls off (Microsoft's, Zone Alarm or whatever else you've got). Recheck that network file and print sharing is on for all computers, even if it warns you that it's a security risk. Then see if you can ping each computer's IP address from the command window by typing
ping 192.168.1.X, where X is the last IP digits assigned by your WLAN router for the computer your pinging. Make sure the NIC ethernet interface is enabled on all computers, and you could temporarily connect an ethernet cable to the wireless laptop and turn on the 10/100 Mbps ethernet port. If you can't ping all computers from any one of the computers, you will have to trouble shoot the ethernet LAN operation first.

Hey Dude,

The share is probably fine, your firewall is blocking them both. Turn off the firewall and see if it works. Then, if it does, go back and tweak file and print sharing on the firewall.

Local firewalls are stupid. Is there ever a case where you want to block a home network computer from another one? Plus local firewalls take up valuable system resources and make the pc appear to be slower than it is.

Go and buy a hardware appliance like a linksys BEFSR41 (non-wireless) or a WRT54GS (Wireless).

You have to go to the firewall section of the software and add the other comps mac address or ip address range to the access list.
They'll call it something else but this in essence is what you have to do.

Have you activated any kind of firewall?

If you are on a LAN (behind a router) you can safely disable the firewall. If you are directly connected to the internet, maybe you can allow NETBIOS traffic on only one of the interfaces (the one that is connected to your LAN).
