1. Get out your big Road Atlas and turn to your state's pages.

2. Go to http://www.usps.com and verify hours of operation of the Main Post Office or the General Mail Facility (two very different kinds of post office) in the closest major city to your area. Print it out, and continue the usps.com inquiry process with smaller cities that are closer to you, since there's a possibility they're open later and might not necessitate as long a trip.

3. General Mail Facility type post offices are often located in major airports and some have operating hours later than the big one downtown. Sunday hours are not unheard-of! It just depends on the city!! In Philadelphia, PA, for example, the main one is at 30th Street and Market, and is full-service until 11:59:59 PM. In Washington, DC, the one you'll want is at Massachusetts Avenue and North Capitol Street, and is in operation until 8:00 PM. The big General Mail Facility for Baltimore is at BWI International Airport and is open until 10:00 PM for same-night-postmarks; at least last year it used to be.

4. Print out the street address to the post office you're now SURE is going to be open when you plan to get there based on usps.com, and verified via a phone call to 800-ask-usps (do this on the way in order to save time), and go on Mapquest.com and print out yourself a little map to that street address for that post office.

5. Put a full tank of gas in your car, pack your cellphone and the item you're mailing, and get going, quick! Drive safely!

Most post offices that I"m aware of close at noon on Saturday.

You are out of luck, unless you want to send it by FEDEX, or UPS (which can be expensive), or can send it by FAX. I think that the only reason for the mailed response is to have a postmark to verify the date of submission. I don't see any other options.

Time travel?

You cannot.

BTW Fedex, DHL ect, do not meet the requirements of a POSTmark, by law your entry can and probably would be justifibly declined out of fairness to the people who got thier entries in on time.

Sorry

Start hunting for mailboxes that still have a pick-up today or tomorrow. This will get the letter to the sorting office and stamped by year end.
