I ask very specific questions about past performance. For example:

Q: "What did you do with your last company?"

A: "I was in charge of widgets."

Q: "What were your primary duties with widgets?"

A: "I managed the widget making team."

Q: "Tell me about the most recent project you managed with the widget making team."

A: "We had to increase production levels for a new line."

Q: "What were the three greatest benefits to the company as result of that project?"

A: "We increased production 300%, we increased revenues 100%, we cut costs 25%."

Q: "What three things would you have done differently if you could start over knowing what you know now?"

This question is a sneaky way of asking what went wrong and giving the person a chance to expose some of their weaknesses. Naturally, the responses to all of the questions above might need to lead to more detailed questions.

I also like asking the expected questions (sometimes I do it first so that it helps us start talking and relaxes the situation):

What are three things you do extremely well?
What are three things you do poorly?
Why are you leaving your current/last job?

These are questions that the applicant has probably rehearsed and expects. If not, then it provides a little insight on the candidate.

Overall, relax and enjoy the interview from your side, it is much more fun than being the interviewee!

How will you contribute to the success of the company? What are their expectations?
Why did they leave their last job?
Give me an example, from your past, of how you handled a "delicate situation", or; describe the worse situation you were ever in, and how did you resolve it?

you can find questionnaires on the web that can help you see their personality profile, indicate their work ethic, honesty and team-play-ability. That would be much more effective than just a question or two in the interview.
