We have a netgear wireless router connected to the PC, which is connected to the broadband modem. My housemate set it up (presumably following the instructions) but I couldn't access the internet when data encryption was selected. It works using an unsecure connection, but any hints on how 2 set it up properly???

It is possible that the encryption of the computer card and the router are mismatched. Choose 64bit, 128 bit or whatever and be sure the type of encryption match.

The codes entered can be one of many codes. For example, a 128 bit code may accept Hexadecimal (digits 0-9, A-F) or just text. If text is used, be sure the same text works on the PC card. Hex is usually the best code to use as universally accepted.

Try a simple 0123456789ABCDEF012345... as much as it will hold.
Then enter the same on the pc.

note that it asks for a "key 1", key 2, etc. be sure that it is the same on each machine. I suggest just using Key 1.

Also, consider setting the Network ID to something obscure and select the option to NOT broadcast the ID. It keeps people from outside from seeing or knowing the network to select.

To access the network, you must set it up in the Wireless card Properties window.

Sounds like your roommate didn't set up the wireless encryption on the router. Follow the instructions in your manual on how to set up your encrypted wireless.

Update:
It's also possible that you think you're connecting unencrypted to your own network but could be connecting to someone else's nearby.

Ensure that the encryption type and the encryption key on the laptop matches your wireless router. That's all you need to do.
