Your question do Me think to a famous swedish chemist, S. Arrhenius, lived in XIX and XX centuries.
He was awarded by Chemistry's Nobel prize.
Among his works, he define an important, but not the ultimate, definition for acids and bases. Since his theory, acid is an substance who can dissociate itself (in some conditions, e.g. solution in its system wuith a capable solvent) and liberates hydrogen ions. The latter are responsibles for acid nature.

H-acid is a naphthalene derivative, an intermediate in production of azo dyes. The chemical name is 4-amino-5-hydroxy-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid. A dye maker would take an aromatic amine like aniline, C6H5-NH2, diazotize it with HNO2 to C6H5-N=N+, which would add a C6H5-N=N- group to the naphthalene ring, resulting in the dyestuff.
