Depends on the graphics card.

nvidia Geforce 6600 Series
nvidia Geforce 7600 Series
nvidia Geforce 7900 Series

ATi X1600 Series
ATi X1800 Series
ATi X1900 Series

Those cards are good for most games. If you don't have one of those then chances are the card is not good for gaming.

I want to respond to what some others have said. First of all, current generation games don't even use all of that 256MB, speed for a graphics card is more important than memory. No, 128MB won't necessarily be enough but the Geforce 6600GT was (and still can be) used for gaming and beats some cards that have 256MB of memory. Not that I would purchase a 6600GT but it was hot stuff a year ago.

Secondly, yes, you can buy a Radeon X1600 with 512MB of memory or a Geforce 7600GT with 512MB of memory but a 7900GS with 256MB will smear them all over the floor. Why? Because the 7900GS has a superior architecture and fast clock rates. Speed and architecture matter more than memory in most cases.

Like I said, it's not just memory, it's the board it's mounted to.

256 is a minimal amount for todays games.

Today's games are more than the mb on the video card. The overall speed of your computer helps alot. Anything higher than 2Ghz CPU motherboard speed should suffice.

You will also need hard drive space as todays games unpack 1-2 gigabytes of hard drive space. If your hard drives are not SATA or 7200+ speed you can count on long load times making game start times longer than most.

Consider adding more RAM memory too. Most computers come with 512mb to 1 gigabyte motherboard memory. Adding more allows better load and screen transition times.

So in summary (for best game action and response time)
Video Card: 512mb+
Hard Drive: 7200+ or SATA
RAM Memory: 1.5 to 2 gigabytes

Haven't stopped gaming since computers were invented.

its no longer a foul card yet no longer precise of the type the two. definately any video games from 2006 will ought to have their pics became down decrease to play. you would be happy with 0.5 existence 2, farcry and comparable video games from in line with possibility a three hundred and sixty 5 days or 2 in the past as thes eshoudl run o.k. on that gadget. some greater moderen interest could be advantageous too, like the recent choose for speed and the sims 2 do no longer in basic terms pass off what the interest field says is the minimum standards as this is in simple terms what's important to get the interest to boot up, to no longer make it playable.

It is probably the bottom end of acceptability of the more current video games. If you are going to use your pc for gaming, know that it is going to cost a FORTUNE!

Xbox 360 and PS3 are really your best bet for gaming right now.

In 1 or 2 years, cloud computing will take over and gaming again will be COOL online, on a "pc"
