My roommate in college TRIED to walk a mile in someone else's shoes but the security guard caught her before she made it that far.

Yes.I walked about 6 miles from my grandmothers house to my house in Brooklyn.I had to wear my sisters shoes because mine were heels(not too comfortable).But not in the way you mean.

Numerous times - when I was dirt-poor and not just poor, I used to buy all my shoes at thrift stores run by the Salvation Army.

yes actually I have- had to borrow my roomates shoes for a PT test in the Army as mine were lost in the mud. LOL funny memory.
