Do a search of the routers model number in google or yahoo and see if there is any other firmware available for it. Linksys used to use a Linux program in some routers and there are a bunch of new software written for them that will make a 50.00 router work like a 300.00 unit. It allows a lot more securty settings and ability to increase signal strength... along with a ton more options that the factory firmware did not have.

Another suggestion is, get a linksys wireless adapter card. Wireless routers work best with cards of the same brand.

If it's not due to placement of the router, then perhaps a stronger antenna on the router or for the laptop would help.
First try moving the router away from things like a monitor, CPU, etc.; things with power supplies. If that doesn't help, many routers have a 3-5db antenna. You can attach a stronger one, say 7db, to provide better coverage.

Linksys sells booster antennas for most of their wireless devices. Essentially you unscrew the antenna from the back and screw in the new one (it's very simple to do). Post the model number of your router and I can provide you with a link for the antenna you'll need to purchase (their are two types -- TNC and SMA).
