I agree that women shouldn't be reckless sexually and then have abortion as a solution to their problem, yet what happens if a woman is raped? Should she have the child? Many women have had the child and have learned to deal with that fact, yet when you are in their place who knows what you would do. It is very hard emotionally to deal with having the child of a rapist, who may or may not have been on drugs at the time - affecting the development of the baby. Also, what happens if that women who was raped can't support the baby financially? If she works two jobs to support the baby, yet doesn't really have time to raise the child... what happens if the child becomes a criminal/murderer? Should you use the death penalty if he is convicted?

I believe that abortion should be allowed in special cases, yet that is just me. It is hard for me to tell anyone else what they should do though because it is not me and it is not my body. Who knows what I would do in that situation... many people have been known to have an abortion after having been a steadfast believer that abortions were wrong. It all depends on the situation and until you are in the situation it is hard to say what you would do.

I think that outlawing abortion will have all of the effect that lowering the speed limit would on how fast people drive.

It's not WHETHER women have abortions, it's how.

If you consider the total medical cost of botched, unsanitary abortions performed by unqualified surgeons, all of a sudden this issue loses it's black and white qualities.

It is a gut wrenching and complex issue.

But it's also simply insane that as many abortions take place as do.

There are many problems in this world that we don't fully understand, hell, even global warming can't be specifically traced to one source.

But abortion is different.

We know (or at least most of us do) how women get pregnant. What causes the vast majority of abortions is unwanted pregnancies.

How can it be that in the first decade of the 21st century so many women are having unwanted pregnancies?

To me, this is a root cause question that bears scrutiny.

Also, for as long as I've lived (just turned 47) I've seen abortion as a hot button issue in every election that I've ever witnessed.

There are politicians on both sides of the issue that claim to care deeply about this.

And yet not once have I heard a single politician ever produce a plan or even suggest the idea of a plan to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies in the USA.

How can this be?

Putting a law into effect may make you feel better about yourself, but it won't solve the problem.

A big part of what is wrong with the USA these days is that our 'leaders' have stopped trying to solve problems and only use them to get elected...

I dont see how anyone could be against abortion in cases of incest or the mothers health/life being in danger due to medical complications if she carries the child.
In addition I think most people would agree to it being ok in cases of rape and issues like that.

In certain scenarios its a difficult issue. teenage girl gets pregnant , no father will be in the picture. yes adoption is good alternative. But many cant get themselves to give the child away after they have carried it and then foolishly try and keep the child.

I knew a girl who had had 3 abortions and given one kid up for adoption before she was 21. Total wreckless and irresponsible behaviour. And alot of people who really struggle with the moral implications of abortion see people like that and well.. its hard to say ok it should be available to anyone.

Now to throw in my however. I didnt really think about this until a friend and I were discussing it. But how about the 'morning after pill' is that abortion? how about regular birth control pills? is that abortion?
Actually it is. an egg attaches and is fertilized but the pills cause the womans body to reject it basically. Isnt that abortion too really?

It cant be wrong under all circumstances.

I think it's my choice. Not anyone Else's.. not to mention a Constitutional right of Mine, and every other woman out there. I don't think half the people out there that are against abortion can walk a mile in the shoes of the person having to make such a decision, and should try to quit acting as if they can.
I don't recommend having an abortion, and I don't feel it is appropriate for abortion to be used as a form of birth control, however, If a brother raped his sister, got her pregnant, do you really think she would want to keep the baby, that could not only be retarded or deformed, but would be a constant reminder of a horrible event. Oh I forgot, she could give it up for adoption, however, if something is wrong with the child, who would actually adopt it? Chances are the child would be subjected to a life in an institution, and really is that life?
Not to mention, what if pregnancy for a woman ends up being life threatening to her... what should she just die, and therefore the fetus would die with her or be born to a motherless home, many homes today don't have fathers... so there is no promise that dad will be there to care for the baby.
People spend so much time complaining about things that they can choose to do or not to do.. why don't they complain about something that really is worth changing... like most of the schools located in poorer areas, that are "leaving the kids behind"? And stop being control freaks.. trying to control people they don't even know...
People complain about this and it's more than ridiculous, it's absurd.
This may be "weak" to some, but it is more realistic than most people think.
We have homeless families, children, adults... people going hungry.. and the same people who say ban abortion in alot of cases... also say no to foodstamps, housing assistance. I see people write checks to charities for other countries, but don't want their own people in their own country to have foodstamps to buy food for their families.

I don't believe that abortion is wrong under all circumstances. I believe that there are exceptions to having an abortion. I don't believe that a woman who is pregnant as a result of a rape should have to give birth to that child. I think that there are also certain medical issues that should be considered as well.
I don't however believe that abortion should be used as a form of birth control by those who continue to get pregnant over and over again.
As someone who is dead set against abortion under any circumstance I would be curious to know just how many of these unwanted children have you are any of your friends adopted??

I'm pro-choice. I'm fine with your choice to not support abortions, so now you should never have one. but you have no right to tell me or anyone else what to do with their bodies.

fetuses can't think or feel right away. once they have association areas and frontal lobes then they are a full functioning person. some people mention that the nerve ending function- this is true.

but fetuses can be compared to coma patients- their brains can record things, but they don't actually feel, think, hear, or remember. the difference is that a coma patient has lost brain connection and a fetus lacks the parts of the brain to think, feel, or have memory.

I'm against abortion after the fetus is capable of thought. even in the case of a mother's life I'm against partial birth abortion- I think she should just induce labor. the chance of a pre-me surviving is low (very low!) but its better than cracking its skull open.

I have no problem is the doctors and mother than choose not to hook him/her up to life support because it has no chance of living on its own.

in the end, I respect everyone's beliefs but its not fair for someone to try and legislate thier views and dictate others lives

I think its wrong as well. It may be your body, but you have to stop and think, you're killing an innocent little soul, who never asked to be brought into this world. if the mother doesn't want the child, then give it up for adoption...there are plenty of couples out there who want children, and can't. however, the only time I could understand the mother getting an abortion, is if having that baby is a threat to her health, or If there was something seriously wrong with the baby. I wouldn't want it to suffer you know what I mean??

i am for abortions. what about the women who are raped? if she doesnt want the baby y make her have a constant reminder of what happened to her for the next 50 years.

think about this. if a woman get pregnant and doesnt want the baby and abortions is against the law who is going to be responcible for that baby and raise it. i know many women, i being one of them, that got pregnant and never wanted the baby. i had an abortion. now at 28 i have 2 beautiful kids and never look back

I think that you are entitled to your opinion, but not to controlling the lives and beliefs of others. Abortions have been performed for a very long time and will continue to be, legal or not. many woman died at the hands of back alley "doctors". It is an advancement in women's rights that they have the opportunity to have a safe procedure done. You can't stop abortion but you can send it back to the stone ages. I guess the fetus is more important than the mother.

If a child is so deformed that there would be no quality of life for the child, nor the family who would go broke trying to pay for the hospital trying to play God. If the mother was brutally raped. I have a problem with abortion being used to fix "Ooops", but having it legal is saving lives too. How many women died before abortion were legal because of back room doctors?
