Can anyone help me, my car(06 Chevy HHR) has a very musty odor that comes out of the dash vents, with and without the a/c on, though it seems to be worse when you first start it up without the hvac system on. The odor is very pronounced and a few friends and relatives have had this same problem, particually with GM vehicles. Does anybody know of a fix for this, I'm sure my car isn't the only one with this problem. I've had it only a year and it smells really bad, like meldew or stagnant water. Thanks for any help.

Yes, this is a common problem with vehicles that have auto climate control or that get the a/c used a lot. There is mold living on the evaporator that gives you that wonderful odor, the best way to get rid of it is with a product called Frigi-Fresh, available from BG Products. Normally its only sold or used at professional shops or dealers, some will only do the service for you, others will sell you a can of it. Follow the directions on the can, its very easy to use, and only takes a few minutes. Problem will be gone for months. But you should also realize this problem is by no means particular to GM vehicles.

If it's not something else, like a coolant leak, and you've got aircon, it's that which needs cleaning. Get a new filter and clean out the air trunking. You can get a sort of aerosol for the job that you set off inside the car with the aircon on recirculate - try Halfords. Another (and cheaper) trick is to boil a kettle inside the car for 20 minutes (you'll need to tape the switch down and keep it full), again with the aircon on full and recirculate. In future, keep the air on "fresh" whenever possible, and run it at least weekly whether you need it or not to keep everything lubricated. Good luck.

The problem is mold growth on the evaporater core. While there is no fix for this..the problem can be lessened by running the fan only for a while before turning off car to dry the core out. This needs to be done after running the a/c or the defroster (defroster engages the a/c compressor).

what happens is that when you have your air conditioner on your vents will get condinsation in them and if you dont blow just air through them after to dry them out mold will start growing in them resulting in that smell to solve this problem spray lystol in the intake vent that is where your wipers are the lystol will kill the mildew and rid you of the smell
