My boyfriend was in Iraq (he's home now), so I tried to find different types of things to send to him while he was over there. You should go into stores that sell knick knacks and stores of art. I have a store in my area called "Gifts Of Art" where I would find little sentimental tokens to send to him. I sent him a small stone which had "LOVE" etched into it and shellacked. You don't have to give anything big, but it's the sentiment that comes with whatever you get him. You should first start with a hug and kiss, of course.

I think the "big hug, kiss, hand with luggage" answers are the best.
For me, when I come home from a long trip, I like to come home to a clean, organized, stress-free house and clean soft sheets on the bed. When I was single I used to clean the house before going on a trip for this reason. It would be even nicer to have someone else do it for you!
Sounds like he's been on a long plane trip, so I probably wouldn't suggest expecting him to want to go out to eat or sit through a full dinner. You know his habits better than anyone else, but it might be nice to have a few different foods that he likes all ready when he gets home, that he can graze on informally for a bit before, probably, collapsing into bed.

A huge hug, a big smile and some affection.
Have a good friend come over and take a picture of you in some sexy lingerie. Take that photo with you to the airport in a "Welcome home" card. Give him the card and tell him you have a surprise for him when you get home... you in the lingerie!! He'll probably appreciate that!!

You could do the "naked under a trenchcoat and wearing high heels" greeting (a friend of mine did that just 2 days ago) or simply give him a passionate kiss and make sure he knows you are pleased that he's home...
Take him out to dinner if he's up for it, or let him go home and relax to get over his jetlag...

Make a big sign with his name on it and hold it high in the air. Have balloons to welcome him back. The fuss should impress him, and it shows you put thought into being creative. Best Wishes!!
