Yes, being attractive is gene based. That doesn't mean two unattractive people can't create a beauty, but the odds of it happening are against it. And the opposite is also true, two attractive people are not guaranteed of having an attractive offspring. Yet, the law of averages says two attractive people will most likely have an attractive offspring. It's all genetic and you can't buy attractiveness in the store, maybe at a plastic surgeon. Yet that's a maybe.

Not really.
Physical characteristics are determined mainly by genetics, but what constitutes "attractive" or "unattractive" traits are determined by societal frames of reference. In other words, traits that are considered "attractive" in one culture may not be "attractive" in another, so whether a person is "attractive" or not depends solely on the perception of the observer.

I don't look anything like any member of my family. I'm in better physical condition because I don't drink, smoke or eat fatty foods everyday, and I exercise. My nieces are both absolutely beautiful girls, and where that came from is from their moms, who are not my blood relatives.

Of course it does. I knew this couple that looked like dorks and their children looked even dorkier. Looks run in the family.
