Without knowing the model of your modem, the best answer I can give you is maybe.
The other (more likely) factor that could be slowing it down is not the modem, but the DSL line. Call your phone company and tell them about your problem and ask them what your sync rate is. They should be able to figure out what going wrong from there.

Theoretically, yes. But it's not likely. DSL speeds are mostly dependent on the physical distance between you and the routing station.
And honestly, unless you've constantly got massive downloads going on your computer, 768kbps probably would have worked just fine for both your systems.
You can try checking your speed here:
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest
Keep in mind that 6.0mbps is the absolute fastest that the technology can go. Usually you won't even see half that in real life, between transmission times and overhead. If the speed is slow, call whoever manufactures your DSL and ask them whether the older model would be limiting your speed.

An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

Do you know for sure that it's the modem?
Go to dslreports.com and run their speed tests. Do it with the xbox device turned off and again when it's on.
If you aren't reaching near the 6mb speed, with the xbox off, contact your ISP - they may be able to tell you if the modem is capable. (Without a brand/model, we can't tell either.)
