How would I go about speeding up my computer if you need the specs they will be listed below.


2 year old Compaq
Intel Pentium 4 processor
512 MB of RAM
60 GB memory

Games installed:
Age of Empires (I & II)
Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 only
Casino Empire

The easy answer is to get a new machine.

The harder and more technical answer is that you could get a new hard drive. Make sure its a 7200 RPM drive and transfer everything over from the old one using Partition Magic. Keep the old one in an external USB case because they really come in handy.

Also, a new video card would speed things up a bit. Your system probably has an AGP slot, though if its a low cost system, it might not even have that.

Get rid of processes you do not need; go to the STARTUP CONFIGURATION UTILITY, identify the stuff you don't use, and uncheck it from the startup list.

Remove programs you do not want from the Add/Remove programs function in Control Panel.

Clean up the cache of your browsers, clean up your disk, and defragment it.

Upgrade your video card if you have an old one - the more memory onboard the card, the faster the performance.

Increase your RAM to 1 GB.

you could go to Start, run type msconfig.then you can go to your start up and clear all of the stuff you don't need to start with your computer than if you find some thing you need to load up again you can always go back.
