There was no real "Mr. Bojangles". "Bojangles" was a character played by actor Bill Robinson in a movie with Shirley Temple.

If I remember my trivia correctly, Mr. Bojangles died of exposure. He had been thrown in jail for vagrancy in a rather large town and when they found out who he was, the police cut him loose. Unfortunately, Mr. Bojangles was not in his home city, knew no one and headed for the railroad tracks. At some point he sat down under a bridge (probably and trestle) and went to sleep. He never woke up.
