Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani
Fried Green Tomatoes
The Blue Castle- by LM Montgomery (that last one is more about a woman standing up to her controlling family and proving her independence that way, but her family mostly consists of pigheaded men, so it's my favorite gurl powa book).
And remember not all men are pigs...just make sure you're happy with you before you ever hope to be happy with someone else.

Have you tried any of the Stephanie Plum bounty hunter books? They're just quick easy, funny reads with a strong female character who lives alone and kicks bounty butt ;)

They might not be what you're after as there are 2 guys she's interested in, but she's a strong woman and very funny - just a thought! :)

"Prom" by Laurie Halse Anderson (the guy stuff is a major subplot), anything by Tamora Pierce, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott...all of these books have women or girls who fall in love but don't lose themselves while doing so and are ahead of their times in terms of independence.
