Winston Churchill because he failed and succeeded many times and always bounced back. Also, I think Churchill fits the aphorism "some man are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them". He led the UK through some perilous years and did it with strength and grace and determination.

Jane Addams, the creator of one of the first "settlement houses" in the US. She was a tireless advocate of the voiceless (the poor, uneducated, women, etc.) and revolutionized social work in this country.

Robert E. Lee, the famous Confederate general. How difficult it must have been for him, a West Point graduate and gifted Union general, to resign his commission and fight for the South. He always labored under a terrible burden, but despite being torn, he followed his conscience and fought well.

Very thought-provoking question. Thanx for asking...

Only one dinner party??? That's not fair. Okay, here goes..William Shakespeare, Leonardo DiVinci, Genghis Khan for the first dinner. The second party I'd invite Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard), Geoffrey Chaucer, and Calvin Coolidge. the third party I'd invite Ben Franklin, Mata Hari, Guy Falkes (I've always secretly loved spies).
