Go to Millsberry.com and try their Sudoku. They have a 4x4 that will help you figure out how Sudoku works. Sometimes there is more than one right answer and you get to choose. But, other times you can't put a number in a square because that would force a different number in another square that CAN'T go there. Example:

1 A | 2 3
3 2 | 4 B
-----------
C 3 | 1 4
D 1 | 3 E

Imagine the letters are blank spaces. The C and the D could both take a 2. However, you're going to have to put the 2 where E is, because that's the only number left for that square. So, you cannot put the 2 where D is. Therefore, you must put the 2 where C is.

I hope that wasn't confusing. :)

you need to place the numbers 1 - 9 in each box, and not only that, but you need to have numbers 1 - 9 horizontal and vertical, like so...

1 2 3 / 4 5 6 / 7 8 9
4 5 6 / 1 2 3 / 9 8 7
7 8 9 / 7 8 9 / 1 2 3 / = where the line is

as you can see, there is numbers 1 - 9 horizontal and vertical, with no numbers repeating themselves in teh same line. Obviously, the real sudoku will have 6 more squares, but I hope that this small-scale example will help you.

Sudoku is pronounced, sue-dough-koo. Hope I helped! ^_^

As the rest of the answerers have said, Soo-doh'-coo doesn't have a pattern. The best way to determine which number goes where is to look the grid and notice which numbers are there the most; if , for instance, there are lots of 5's, then it's easier to figure out where the missing 5's go. Work the puzzle backwards.
Note: in pronunciation you can stress either the first or the second syllable. Both ways are acceptable.

The pattern is different every time. Each row, column and 3x3 box has all the digits from 0-9. If you narrow your choice down to two spaces then you have to use a different piece of information to cross-reference. There are several different ways to eliminate possible choices. I've never read a book on tips nor got any advice from anybody I just try to look for ways to eliminate the possibility of a certain number going in each box.
