Uh, I suppose kind of angry, aggressive, anti-establishment music that has a rough, bare type of sound to it, without much attention being paid to the skill with which the instruments are played, more on the sound overall. And lyrics that are usually half-shouted.

Punk is not "dead", but it has evolved. Originally, punk rock was garbage from a pure musical standpoint. Most punk musicians didn't even know hot to play they're instruments (Sid Vicious). Punk knowadays has a different feel to it. There isn't the angst that the Ramones and Sex Pistols had. But to answer you're question, back in the day punk would be Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash, new York Dolls. Now I would have to say my personal punk bands are Rancid, Pennywise and Suecide Machines. I don't consider that New Found Glory or Good Charollette crap punk. They're glorified emo.

Punk rock became a major phenomenon in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s, but its popularity was more sporadic elsewhere. Over the course of the 1980s, various forms of punk rock emerged in small scenes around the world, often outright rejecting commercial success or association with mainstream culture. By the end of the 20th century, punk rock's legacy had resulted in the formation of the alternative rock movement, while new punk bands popularized the genre decades after its initial heyday.
