I answered a trivia question about slang for a flint and container. I said "flint-box" the answer on the card read. "Flint and a metal striker used in case matches get wet or are not available." My boyfriend would not give me the right answer, how would you decide?

Sorry the boyfriend is right
they are two different things
the flint-box is used to hold the flint
The flint and striker are separate things altogether

The flint box is what the flint and metal striker are kept in. I think your boyfriends is right on this one.

It's TINDER BOX with an "I" - not "tender box" with an "E." A tinder box is a "small tin box containing steel and flint for sparks, and pieces of charred linen cloth to catch fire."

The terms "flint box," "flintbox" and "flint-box" are not found on wikipedia nor dictionary.com. "Flint and steel" is the correct term for the stone and metal striker, respectively.

I would have accepted tinder box, but not flint box.

Flint box would be good enough for me. The card is for idiots that need definitions. Flint box IS the item the card described.
