One thing with a roller or brush I get paint everywhere. I mean all over the house. With a sprayer I can do a lot neater job and not get painter everywhere. But that is a lot up to the individual. With some people they try to use a sprayer it is a disaster in the making. They get paint everywhere.
When I paint I use a spray then use a brush if I want the textured look. I simply jab the brush in a jabbing motion instead using strokes on the fresh paint to get the textured look. But you have to do it before it starts drying.

Spray is going to give you the best finish but it require a lot of skill and preparation. The overspray will go everywhere, which is why most painters use rollers if the building is already occupied. If you are not a professional, it is best to use a brush and roller. First you have to decide on the color. Re-painting with the same color is easier since you don't have to worry so much about "cutting" around the edges. Don't use the same color exactly but scrape off a piece of the existing wall and have the paint store match the color. This will save you tons of time cutting and make the job look much better. If you do want to change the color, you have to consider what it is going to take to cover the old color. The generally rule is that you can cover over lighter colors with darker easily but it is more difficult to cover over darker with lighter. If it really extreme, like painting cream over blood red, use a primer tinted to 1/2 the color of the new paint first. If you are painting over a gloss finish, scratch up the wall surface with 80 grit sandpaper first. When you ready to paint, cut around the edges. If you don't have steady hand and a good brush, you can mask around the edges with special masking tape (available at the paint store) or use a cutting knife. If you use the knife, be sure to clean it with a handy rag frequently. Once you have cut, let it dry (an hour for latex, overnight for oil) then roll the wall surfaces, overlapping the areas where you have cut. Repeat until you have the coverage you need. Use a natural bristle brush if you are painting oil, nylon if you are painting latex. Foam is a joke. Use a thick, puffy roller if the surface is rough, a short-haired, smoother roller if the wall surface is smooth. Good luck.

I'm starting to paint a bedroom today. I'll start with an airless paint sprayer for the ceiling, which has an acoustic finish (sometimes called "popcorn"). Then I'll paint the baseboard and door casing with an alkyd semi-gloss enamel. After that dries I'll use a paint brush for cut-in on the walls with an acrylic paint. I'll finish the job with a roller on the walls.

If my walls were the same color as the ceiling, I would have sprayed everything. However, it's too much trouble to mask off the ceiling, the baseboard, and the door casing, so I'll use brush and roller.

If you use a sprayer you are going to have paint every where, so you better stick with the roller and the brush. I would not attempt to use a sprayer my self.
