Like I mean really good books that rank up there with LOTR/The Hobbit. And not like Eragon, or Narnia or anything like that. Maybe like Harry Potter? No cheesy romance, either. Unless it actually fits in with the story. So, any suggestions? :D Something ORIGINAL that's never been done before.

I recently discovered the triligy by Robin Hobb called The Liveship Traders. Very excellent. Fascinating story and concept. Certainly something I had never run into before. The trilogy begins with Ship of Magic. The books are nice and long. The sort that you can't stop reading until you get to the end, (especially the further in you get) but you don't want to get to the end. Ms. Hobb really draws you into her world.

There are also the Pern books by Anne McAffrey. Begin with Dragon Flight. These are scifi/fantasy with the emphasis on fantasy.

Fire and Ice series by George RR Martin is great with believable characters and plot lines. It is a character driven story. Very orginal in my opinion.

Wheel of time series by Robert jordan is also great. SOme of the later books go a little slow but by the time you get to them you will be so caught up you wont care. Not as orginal but much more in depth like world of LOTR.

If you are looking for something witty, funny, and intelligent, I suggest anything by Terry Pratchett. If you like more mature stories like LOTR I suggest "The Eye Of the World" series by Robert Jorden. It is very advanced with many plot twists, and Its kept me reading for almost ten years now. I would also suggest the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I'm big on Kings horror books, but his other stuff is pretty good.

Good luck,
Jeremy

My all time favorite fantasy series of all time is The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. There are 12 books out already and one more to go. It is a great series. All of the books are long and very good reading cover to cover. I like the series so much that if our baby would have been a boy his middle name was going to be one of the characters from his books. Check out the link to his site below.

the most unique fantasy i have ever read is Blue Moon Rising. I forget the author, but it was a lot of fun to read. It dosen't rank with lotr but holds it's own i think. Also terry brooks Magic Kingdom series is great, and terry goodkinds wizards first rule series is another truly wonderful experiance.

David Gemmell is my all time favourite fantasy author. There are lots of different series of his, all with different themes etc. IMHO his best are the novels of the Rigante, the first of which is "Sword in the Storm".

David Eddings is another fantasy writer I love, if you give him a try start out with The Belgariad.

Tons of people I know rave about Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, I never got on with it personally, but I think I'm in the minority! ;)

The Time-Master trilogy By Louise Cooper.(review from Amazon)The books are 'The Initiate',The Outcast and The Master. It tells the story of Tarod a fascinating anti-hero, evolving throughout the series from a loyal disciple of Order to the God of Chaos that is his true heritage, with the repeated examination of his humanity thrown into the mix.

Allan Cole wrote the Timura triology.(review from Amazon)
Warrior Iraj Protarus was a boyhood friend of Safar Timura, who, raised to be a potter, turned out to have an at first unsuspected talent for sorcery. The visions they share and the battles they fight side by side as they set off on a journey impeded by intrigue, enemies, plots, betrayals, adventures, and all the other trappings of the fantasy quest are the basic stuff of the book. Eventually, Iraj has a throne and Safar is his high magician, but realistically, the tale cannot end there, for the friends have hardly seen the last of the host of enemies who customarily badger the possessors of power.

I liked 3 books from the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey. The books I liked in the series are Exile's honor,Exile's valor and Take a thief.

The review given below is about Exile's honor.
Valdemar and Karse have long been enemies. The Karse have made an art of it, sending bandits to plunder Valdemar, having their priests train the people to believe that anyone with a Herald's Gift is a demon in need of death. Alberich of Karse, newly-made captain and gifted with a handsome white stallion, has never formally committed himself to battle with his hereditary enemy. He has the gift of foresight, which he has long tried long to hide, but cannot when he sees that a village is about to be attacked and destroyed. He rallies his men, and saves the lives of many, only to forfeit his own. Two men who wanted his commission take advantage of the situation and have a Priest condemn him as a demon. They throw him in a small barn, planning to burn him to death. His white stallion charges in to save him, but he is still badly burned. This stallion, a Companion named Kantor takes him to Valdemar, where he is healed... only to find himself facing a whole new set of problems.

Mercedes Lackey's Take a Thief is the tale of Skif, a young orphan reminiscent of Oliver Twist, making his way in the knock-and-tumble neighborhood between two of Haven's outermost walls. Skif is intelligent, good-hearted and creative enough to forage up three meals a day in a place where food is scarce and kindness almost unheard of. After a chain of events leave him homeless, Skif lands in the lair of Bazie, an Faginish ex-mercenary who trains thieves...until he is "Chosen" by one of Valdemar's magical horses and becomes a Herald serving the Queen.

Belgariad book series-David Eddings.A proper quest, wizard, sorceress and all.

A wizard of Earthsea-Ursula Le Guin

No, there aren't*. Tolkein did it with Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. When they suddenly became successful (a long time after they were written), loads of authors tried jumping on the bandwagon but, in my opinion, none of them succeeded. I once tried to read the first book in the Thomas Covenant series - had to give it up afte about 50 pages, it was totally unreadable.

*except anything in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
