Few clinicians continue to use psychoanalysis. The theories are more academic than they are useful to specific individuals - most therapists don't really apply theories such as the Oedipus Complex or Womb/Penis Envy to clients.

Psychodynamic therapy is currently more common than traditional psychoanalysis. This type of therapy looks to the underlying causes of problems and examines what they mean for the individual person.
