The papers are full of stories about frivolous claims made by people who are trying to make money out of minor misfortunes.
The are encouraged to do it by "claim companies" advertising on the television.
Companies and Councils pay up to avoid the cost of fighting claims, as does the Government and insurance companies.
Who pays? You and me as taxpayers and premium payers.
Do you think it should be stopped?
How can it be stopped?

Other than legitimate cases such as I think Carla's may have been, I think little claim games is the biggest scam of our times. Indeed we pay through our noses in extra taxes and premiums to insurance companies.
I think it should be stopped, but the how to stop is another matter. One of the problems is that we have greedy claim types wanting people to have a go at compensation for anything above an hangnail, and people want something for nothing.

No. I think you are completely misunderstanding the powerful effect that litigation can have on ensuring that corporations follow the proper rules and guidelines. Otherwise, civil code is not enforced.

If a claim is truly 'frivolous', then it will have been dismissed.

Everyone points to the McDonald's coffee incident as 'frivolous', but no one mentions the fact that the coffee served by McDonald's was much much hotter than any coffee served by any other restaurant (by some 15-20 degrees). So much hotter, in fact, that McDonald's had already received many complaints about the heat of their coffee, yet had done nothing to change it.

Drives me crazy to think of how much money has been given to people for illigitimate claims. Can't imagine how it can be stopped without causing trouble for people with real legitimate need to be compensated. I imagine do some number of random checks to see if people are actually telling the truth would be a way but I'm sure they do this already. Increasing this would cost more time and money so a ballance would need to be found...

I absolutely think frivolous claims should be stopped. It's not only dishonest but costly to honest policyholders from homeowners, medical insurance...on and on. I don't even have an idea of how to control it, it all comes down to greed.
