No, if you are required to leave the premises, you do not pay rent. You pay rent at the location you move to for the three weeks.

That would depend on your lease and the reason the lessor wants to remodel the kitchen. If it is because of cause (you caused damage) than you may. Your landlord most probably does not have anything in the lease allowing them to ask you to leave and pay. In Louisiana your lease should provide you with the right to use the property. If your landlord takes that right away from you then they loose the right to collect rent. I would make sure something is drawn up in writing before you let them do any major remodeling stating exactly what is going to happen and how long with penalties. A 3 week job may turn into a 2 month job. I would suggest getting with the landlord about mutually breaking the lease and moving without fault. Even if in the lease you gave the landlord this right, your state may not allow this. I would check with a local Realtor for the current rules and regulations for your state.
Good luck
Michael

No, the landlord is not entitled to rent while the premises is under renovation. The exception to this is if your landlord pays for your temporary accomodation while the work is being done.

If she offers to put you up in a decent hotel -- no flea-bags, please -- then pay the rent and be happy that you have found a decent landlord.

1st she can not legally do this without your permission or legally terminating the lease

2nd not only should you not be liable for rent during this time she should pay the cost of living somewhere else while she remodels

I don't know if she can do that legally, but it doesn't sound right to me. Is she paying for you to stay wherever you'll be staying, or do you have to cover that yourself? Is the remodel a necessity? I
