This article about LGBT teens not being out to their doctors made me think about it.

I believe it's absolutely essential for lesbian and bi women to be out to our gynecologists, and for men to be out to their urologists. It's also a good idea to tell GPs. But there are also things that may block us from telling--for instance, being closeted or the unavailability of other doctors should this one be phobic.

How does it work out for you?

I specifically looked for and found a gay friendly doctor so that I could be out. I feel it is important for my doctor to be aware of my history and preferences so that he can properly diagnose any issues that may come up in my life.

Please do not jeopardized your health to stay in the closet. If you are not in the closet, there is absolutely no reason not to inform your doctor.

I'm in grad school, and don't have a primary physician. When I was still in high school, I was still coping with my own sexuality, and was not out to my doctor at all. Since then, I usually interject something about "my girlfriend" most of the time, and come out if the matter is gynocological in nature.

However when I settle into a job and get a real primary care doctor, I am going to come out to them ASAP. If this doc doesn't respect me or my sexual orientation, then I will take mine and my insurance dollars elsewhere.

I saw a doctor for the first time in 7 years. First thing she asked and I told her. She even offered to set me up with some of her friends

I am out to all! and yes that includes my dr. There are some conditions that would be sexual in nature and the dr. would have to know. I was having problems with fanting and when i was taken by ambulance to the emergency room, one of the test they took was a pregnancy test! I am a lez so I could have saved them time and money if they had given me a chance to let them know. I KNEW I WASN'T PREGGERS ! lol

I'm out to everyone, including my Doctor, Dentist, and Chiropractor.

Haven't come out to the guy that takes the aluminum cans out of my trash yet. Should I?
