Wait staff can make a LOT of money if you find the right place AND hussle your butt off and give your customers top-notch service.
I have a very good friend who has waitressed for over 30 years at a small town family style restaurant (similar to Denny's) that is not noted for either stellar service or high tips. She's like a whirling dervish on the job and handles twice as many tables as any of the young guys and gals yet is bright and cheery even on a bad day. Her service has built up an extremely loyal clientele most of whom will simply leave if she's not working. She pulls down nearly 6 figures (in an area where $30k is a good wage) and lives VERY nicely. Although she's in her 50s now, her high activity level has kept her very young; most folks swear she's in her late 30s.
Like most jobs, you get out of it what you put into it. Wait staff who mess up customer orders and have a sour attitude are doomed to sub-minimum wage. The 1%'ers live like corporate CEOs.

I have been a waitress for about 5-6 years and its pretty much HELL. I hated it and I never would do it again. If you really want to earn extra money try working on a home business job. You can work the hours you want and you don't have to deal with people bossing you around all night. It is defiantly worth thinking about. Email me for more info if you think you might be interested.
