To test the effect of the supposed ether (aether, etc.) that was invented to carry light waves, etc., across a vacuum. They expected that light traveling across the ether would have one speed and that traveling up and down would be different, like a boat going up and down stream vs back and forth across. In a very careful experiment using interference light fringes they found no difference. It wasn't until Einstein worked out relativity that the failure of the measurement was explained.

ether is an all pervading rigid medium having zero density and perfect elasticity as proposed by Christiaan Huygens in his wave theory of light .Michelson and Moorley experimentally proved that ether does not exist
