I was mooching through my local video game store, and about the last 9/10 times, I've walked out with nothing...

Thats not to say I had no money... I just didn't see anything that seemed very playable...

So, I suppose the question is...

Am I just starting to grow out of it all (I do still enjoy bf2142 though)

Have game makers forgotton what makes a truly memorable video?

Has the younger generation with its total reliance and review on game 'graphics' made that all new games should be very very pretty, but with very little substance...

Is there hope for us who maybe play games because they're an enjoyable distraction from time to time?

or should i just dig my snes out of the attic?

I'm thinking that the 1st/3rd person shooter games and strategy games are getting to be a bit stagnant. I don't think there was a whole lot of difference between the Halo and Doom games. I like the idea of the Wii's controllers, and hope they evolve new genre's with more interaction.

"Am I just starting to grow out of it all (I do still enjoy bf2142 though)"

Yes.

"Have game makers forgotton what makes a truly memorable video?"

One could NOT forgot something that one doesn't even KNOW in the first place. You're under the assumption that game makers actually knows what makes a truly memorable game.

Game makers are only paid to make games, they're not paid to make memorable games, they're sometimes punished for making memorable games (think Nintendo for their attempts to be innovative).

They make most money from contracts, NOT game sales. They probably don't care if there's no game ever sold, since they were already paid for their jobs.

"Has the younger generation with its total reliance and review on game 'graphics' made that all new games should be very very pretty, but with very little substance..."

It's a PC attitude to view something has very little substance because it's beautiful, or to say that one like beautiful things that have very little substance.

It's more correct to say many new games are too heavily focused on trying to be attractive they loose focus on other areas.

Many new games are suffering the video games sexual revolution, much like many women are suffering the sexual revolution.

Yes, or you already have been bored to death by now.

"or should i just dig my snes out of the attic?"

Yes, or get a Wii, or get some ROMs.

In my opinion thats a no. There are plenty of great video games. FPS, Sports, RPG, and what not. Alot of the games today have great graphics. And 3 new consoles have been released in the passed year or so (Xbox360, PS3, Wii).
But many games and gaming consoles/PC's cost alot of money which brings some gamers down. Also, there are many bad video games, such as (in my opinoin) the GTA series.
So it depends on how you look at it.

write a game program down on paper, a game you would like to play must be invented by you, spend about ten months inventing a game instead of playing a game. the moneys a lot better,
