The instructions usually come with the router itself. If you don't have those, this may help...

1) The router connects between your cable/dsl modem and the computer. One connection on the router is for WAN which connects to the modem. There are often 1 to 4 other LAN ports - plug one of these into your computer.

2) The router usually has a default IP address of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. There are other defaults as well. Once you plug in the router as in step 1 above and power it on, open a browser window and enter the address of http://192.168.0.1/ or the other address.

3) You should be prompted to log in. Try admin as a userid and no password. You may have to refer to Linksys for the specific model to determine what the default user/password is - I forget.

4) Once your in, follow the steps to set up the WAN connection. This tells the router how to start up the modem and connect it to your ISP.

5) You can then follow on to other areas if it has wireless.

It isn't rocket science. You may have to go into setup to give it an SSID, but one comes configured if you just want the default. An SSID is the router name. You might have to configure the IP ranges if you have a service provider like Bellsouth, who has already claimed 192.168.1.1. That means you will have to change the base address in the configuration screen. Not all that hard to do. Just take 192.168.0.1 as your base address. From there, there are many configuration settings that you can chose to do or not.

I use a 4 port Linksys with both of my computers going through it and I don't load their software at all. Just ran the Ethernet cord from each computer to a port on the router, then took the modem cord out to the modem and that is it.

Unplug the capability to the router and modem. First plug in the modem and await it to return returned on line. supply it a minute to verify. Then plug in the router. Modem should be on line first, then router would be plugged in. this would desire to remedy the difficulty. If no longer then consistent with risk the modem is offline. wherein case call your ISP.
