I think the water pump may have gone in my car (Citroen Xsara). Does anybody know roughly how much it will cost to fix? Not a great time of year for this to happen unfortunately because I am skint!

Someone had a look at it for me. This was their diagnosis so it might not be correct. All I know is that the water is escaping from somewhere or doesnt seem to be circulating and it is overheating. I'm sorry I can't expand any more but cars are not my forte. Incidentally it is a Citroen Xsara Forte 2000

If your water pump is not leaking coolant and the car is over heating is why you think the water pump is bad then it might be just a bad thermostat. If you replace the thermostat and it still over heats the radiator may be plugged. You can then try back flushing the system and you may be OK before spending the extra money on a radiator you don't really need. You might what to spend the $20 bucks and have your problem diagnosed before wasting a bunch of money on parts you do not need to replace.

If you can not see the coolant leaking out on the ground it is possible the head gasket(s) are blown. When you drive do you see alot of white smoke coming from the tail pipe?

Water pumps have a small weep hole that leaks coolant when the pump seal is bad. If the mechanic saw water leaking from that hole, that's how he knew the pump was bad. It's not a hard thing to replace, and it's cheap. They can do it in an hour for $50 - $70.

What year is it? I have a 99 Monte Carlo, I paid $12.99 for the part (water pump) My brother in law installed for me for free. If you go to a dealer it would probably cost a small fortune. Good luck
