Your phone is blocked to the 3 network. You need to unblock it for you to be able to use it with other networks.
You can get your phone unlocked from unblocking sites online (not recommended since you dont sound like a mobile phone whiz) or you can just take it to a shop where they do mobile phone unlocking. It will cost you around £10.

You havent mentioned what model your phone is.
If it is a Nokia N series phone, a Nokia 6630 or 6680, you will not be able to get it unlocked from those shops or online. You will have to ring the 3 network and get the unlock code from them. Just tell them that you want to unblock this mobile phone from their network and they'll give you further instructions. This will also cost around £10-£15.

I have a reasonably definitive answer for your question. If a phone is on 3, it can only be unlocked through 3. This costs £15 to do. If you try and unlock it elsewhere, e.g. your local market stall, it will either not unlock at all or it will re-lock after a certain time. However if you do it directly through 3, it will stay unlocked. If the phone is in your friend's name, she will have to contact 3 herself.

Unlocking software, purchaseable from various places, will NOT unlock any 3 phone.

However there are certain models of phone that cannot be unlocked, the Nokia 6630 being one of them, and the NEC 808Y being another example. A phone call to 3 detailing the make and model of your phone should clarify your situation.

I hoe this helps you and happy new year.

Your phone must be locked to 3. You will have to take it to a phone shop and pay about £5-10 to get it unlocked. However, im not sure if you can unlock 3.

If your looking for cheap alternatives then buy a 3 sim card

with the 3 network there are certain phones made specially for them that only work with a 3 sim card, your phone might be one of them

if you're from the uk....

You can go to a phone shop and they'll unblock it for you, but it costs £5 for them to unblock it,

Also if it is exculsive to network 3 you can't unblock it cause the network is already set on it and can't be changed

You wont be able to unblock it yourself,if you ask around amongst your friends there will be an electronics shop or somebody on a local market stall who will know how to do it,normally from between£5-10

call your network provider(the O2 lot) and as long as you have an up to date Account, and a IMEI number thats relevant to your phone, then you should be able to get it unlocked from your network... this will cost. the other options as stated are to take it to a high street and get it unlocked in one of the many over the counter places.. beware, they arent all as reputable as they seem..
*#06# will usually give you your imei number without dismantling the handset.

hope it helps.
