Apple registered the name "iPod" for the internet kiosks they were planning to put into malls or other public areas. When that plan was shelved, they applied the name to the music player they were developing. Based on that, I'd say the "i" stands for internet.

Technically it stands for "Internet".

"iPod" was a name that Apple registered for Internet kiosks, but never put to use. It then took the name and applied it to their portable MP3 player that they'd recently developed - they already owned the name and it was going to go to waste had they not used it for something.

When the whole "i" craze started, I believe most companies were using it as "interactive".
