From what I have read they can live over 20 years. Of course they also can get quite large, I hope you have at least a 55 gallon to start with and can get a larger tank soon. My pleco is only 1.5 years old and already 8 inches long.

Honestly there are about 3 species sold as common plecos. It use to be the H. plecostomus catfih, but Sailfins are being sold as common plecos at least as often. Also there is H. punctatus which few people can tell from H. plecostomus. (Not mention the range pleco sold as a common pleco.) So it's going to depend on the species, but baring disease, and injury it's in the 10-20 year range. This assumes that you got a 50+ gallon tank.

Mine's 10 years old and just about 18" long and he's still going strong. They get up to 30" in the wild and I have heard of people having the same pleco for 25 years.

When under the right conditions, which means 175+ gallons, and weekly water changes, and a good diet, they will live 25+ years.

They live a long time and will grow larger depending on the size of the tank.if you want an unusual cleaner, look into getting a dojo, also known as a loach.
