The effect of the gravitational forces of the sun and moon.

When sun and moon are on the same side, they exert forces that are added, giving spring ( more difference between high and low tides.) tides.

When sun and moon are on opposite sides, you take the difference between the 2 forces to give the net force. This produces neap (less difference between high and low tides)
