some will last up to 5 years. a battery will be dead for good if its allowed to fully discharge and it winds up getting frozen from low temps. a frozen battery is a destroyed battery.

Warranties on batteries run from 24-72 months. The life of a battery is calculated by how many times it can be totally discharged then charged back up. If you can succeed in never running your battery completely down, they will last a long time, many times longer than the warranty period. However, the first time it is completely discharged after the warranty period expires, they can't be charged up again, due to the coating on the plates coming off and settling in the bottom of the battery case.

The fourth year is a common year for them to need replacement. They can last longer, but very often if there's cold weather it will create problems after four years.
Sometimes, depending on the circumstances, they need to be replaced after three years (probably ideally, in order to prevent problems during the Winter after passing Year Four).

according to manufacturers data, life is 42 months. this is average. for me and my family's cars, anything over 3 yrs is on borrowed time. not worth the aggravation and safety factor to stretch it longer than that.
