Some states are trying to stop smoking in cars under what they called "Distracted Driving" laws. That would include women putting on make-up as they drive. Men shaving with electric razors....etc. I really hate these kind of laws because they are not really enforced. I can't tell you how many people I see on a daily basis talking on the cellphone while driving. That law is rarely enforced. NYC already has no smoking laws in public buildings and transportation. New Jersey just passed a no smoking law in their Gambling Casino's in Atlantic City. I wonder how many other ways the Government will find to control our private lives.

Some states do not allow adults to smoke in their cars if children are also in the car. Other than that, there are no laws currently not allowing people to smoke in their cars.

This can be a slippery slope if not approached carefully. If this is passed, they may look at not allowing people to eat in their cars, drink(non-alcoholic) in their cars. If the distraction argument is going to be used for cigarettes, it could be used for anything that diverts your attention from actually driving. Music playing in your car could be a distraction. Cigarettes carry a stigma with them, but the distraction created by them is really no different than distractions that non-smokers also have while they are driving.

Well I think in New York or in California they passed the ban. I think that this is a great and brilliant idea. You have take consideration of other people, cigarettes are bad for your health. The smell is awful! So I will appreciate if they do pass the law. In Florida they banned smoking inside buildings and public transportation.

The few places i've heard of doing this or talking about it do it because smoking is a "distraction" and makes drivers dangerous (same rationale as banning cell phone use in cars). Smoking is banned in public places like bus stops because of the dangers of second hand smoke. I don't think smoking will be banned in cars on a wide scale.

Why would they ask you to stop smoking in your own personal car? I don't allow smoking in my car, but if its your car and you want to breath that nasty smell then it is your right to do so and I will even defend your rights with you.

This shows you the utter and complete ignorance of LIBERALS and DEMOCRATS. They would decriminalize the use of marijuana but make tobacco smoking a criminal offense. How idiotic can they be?????
