I have a modem from my internet company and I want ro extend the range to my cousins house across the street so they can use it as well. How can I do this w/o using a router.

Try out a wireless (or wired) powerline kit, such as: http://netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineWirelessAccessPoints.aspx

If you cousin is across the street, they may be on the same power line as you are, and this should work between your houses. I'd definitely suggest buying this from a store where can you return it if it doesn't work.

In our business, we suggest these devices rather than wireless extenders, which we found very problematic.

I cooperated in doing this with my neighbor.....let internet be free ;)

1. If your cousin has no signal at all.....then you'll need a range expander (either a more powerful router or a longer antenna)

2. If your cousin has a signal, but it is weak.....then look for a "repeater". A repeater is a box that takes a weak signal and amplifies it. I have one in the front of my house so I can get internet in the back of my house from my cooperative neighbor.

i'm guessing that u have problems with the interference interior the 2d floor no longer counting the basement, suitable? you're able to desire to attempt to cord the basement laptop(s) to the router and placed the router on the 1st floor no longer counting the basement. The reception upstairs ought to come out extra helpful because of the fact the basemenet has extremely some pipes and supprt rails/collumns, and a few of them are lead, so on the spot might have a tough time dealing with. desire this helped.

You can go into the settings in your modem and set the settings to a higher range like 10 as it is set to default around 4.

If you're good with electronics, then simply take your modem apart and boost its signal!

As an alternative, buy another modem with a better range.
