There is no strict definition of how many rooms a house has to have before it can be termed a mansion, but realtors generally use the classification for houses with at least 7,000 square feet of floorspace.

In my mind, a mansion would need to have more than 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and would need at least 1 of every other type of room, plus servant's quarters. Space would be abundant, and not cramped. Grounds would be spacious. Parking should be adequate for a large number of guests.

We have a lot of "mini-mansions" in so-cal, but I think that the real deal is more than just a fancy house, regardless of location. It's a home that's large on a grand scale.

Thus, I think 5000 sq. ft. would be too small to qualify, and 8000-10000 sq. ft. would be a good starting point. Land should be 1 acre or more. Preferably more than 2 acres, but this is very dependent on location.

I'd say that defining a mansion is like defining pornography. Difficult to spell out in words, but you'll know it when you see it.

Size is certainly part of it, but appearance is probably more important that size. A mansion has an imposing presence and fine architectural design cues that differ from size alone and separate it from simply a "big house."

It depends on the eyes of the beholder! If you were in a small town with an average home of 1000 sq ft and yours was 3500 sq ft than it would be a Mansion. In New Orleans we call them Plantation Homes. That 3500 sq ft home in Hollywood would be considered service quarters. It is all in the location and the person who would own the house.

This is an excellent question. I don't have and answer for you but I'm curious about the responses.

I imagine it has to do with the size, number of bedrooms and overall price to include the acres of land it is on.

It depends upon where you are. Location, Location, Location.
It's all relative.
