How pleasant you must be to be concerned about the person calling in and having to wait on hold. I COMMEND YOU. Your employer is lucky to have you.

Why not do it this way:

1. If the party they want is busy, ASK the customer which he/she prefers. "He is on another call right now, do you prefer to leave a call-back message or would you like to hold?"

2. If they choose to hold, come back and give them an update and another choice in 60 seconds or so.

Good Luck

Yes, try it yourself at home. Call a number and see how long you are willing to hold the phone. It helps when they play music that is familiar to you. Also, if there is a recording to let you know that there X amount of calls in front of you. If I know how long the wait is going be, then I have an option to hold on or to call back later.

Yes, but you can avoid this by telling them to hold for 2 minute in the first place.
To prompt them the waiting time.
Keep appologies first when you take their call again.
Those really nasty one won't bother how long they put on hold even for a second.

I don't like being put on hold at all. Some company's run on a skeletal staff, that's not my problem. But, I have waited, and waited, and waited. Blah!
